NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2007Friends of the Dansville Public Library
President: Lynne Blum Secretary: Mary Ann Holden Treasurer: Annie Constantine Dear Friends of the Dansville Public Library,
Greetings to you at the beginning of what promises to be an exciting year for Dansville Public Library! I want to thank all our Friends for your continuing commitment to, and support of, the library's efforts to bring the best service to our community.
In briefly reviewing events of 2006, our most significant achievement was the purchase of the Wilcox Auction Center, its adjacent parking lot, and, finally, the November demolition of the old W.T. Grant Department Store. The lot is cleared and settling, quietly awaiting the construction of an addition to the Shepard Memorial building. Stay tuned! We will certainly keep you informed as the project moves along.
We must bid a fond farewell to our volunteer, Sharon Dunn, who served as our registration record keeper for several years. She is a librarian who retired from the East Irondequoit School, and she quickly learned the ropes at DPL. We are going to miss her so much! Sharon and her husband Bill will be moving from Birdsall to Cambridge, NY.
Our second annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon was a resounding success! Catered by Java Jungle and attended by a variety of dignitaries, we enjoyed a companionable review of library events and a summary of expansion plans. Senator Catharine Young's representative, Nancy Leven, recognized David Reinholtz, President of the Library Board of Trustees as Volunteer of the Year for his 20 years with the library. (Later in the fall, David was presented with the Livingston County Library's Ludlum-Holroyd Award at a banquet held in Canandaigua!).
Our 5-Year Plan of Service was completed with the help of the following community members: Adele Bovard, Stacey Correia, Rich deAsis, Bud Gee, Barry Haywood, Dorothy Hotchkiss, Denny Mahus, Sam Riedel, Marie Roberts, Jane Schryver, Mark Schuster, John Vogel, Joe Weider, George Weidman, Ruth Witte; also staff member Mary Stepanik and Trustees Mary Ann Holden and Sherrie Reilly. I want to thank the committee for their time and energy during this visioning process. The Plan can be viewed on the website.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR: In March 2006, Library Friend Don Hayton visited Albany with me, traveling with a busload of lively Library System supporters on Library Legislative Day.
Thank you so much for your continuing support.

The library connects us with the insight and knowledge, painfully extracted from Nature, of the greatest minds that ever were, with the best teachers, drawn from the entire planet and from all our history, to instruct us without tiring, and to inspire us to make our own contribution to the collective knowledge of the human species. I think the health of our civilization, the depth of our awareness about the underpinnings of our culture and our concern for the future can all be tested by how well we support our libraries.

Libraries Are Old Friends!Sometimes we take them for granted, yet a public library provides one of the best continuing sources of learning throughout a person's lifetime. The Friends of the Dansville Public Library support the mission of our library in many ways - sometimes purchasing items for the library which are of great benefit but cannot be purchased from the budget, sponsorship of the summer reading program and other programs throughout the year, and raffles to support the building fund - to name a few. Please join the Friends of the Dansville Public Library. Your public library needs and deserves all the Friends it can get!
Friends of the Dansville Public Library invites you to join us and support our Library and the invaluable services it provides. Click the image below to print an application form. For more information call the Library at 585-335-6720 or email Terry Dearing, Library Director.
